walnut mantle
Custom mantle in walnut. Designed, built, finished, and installed by JEM Carpentry. Berthoud, CO – April 2022.

This custom mantle was built from mill-sawn 4/4 walnut boards, sourced through our local supplier, and surfaced in our shop. I love to use rough lumber from the mill as you never know quite how each piece will look until it is surfaced down to S4S lumber. This batch included some really great pieces of wood with lots of character! The finish coat is a resin-modified tung oil over bare walnut sanded to 220 grit.

Mock-up in the shop before the finish. Putting all the pieces together, where they go, is an integral step in our build process.
Each piece of the mantle is pre-assembled with dominos, pocket screws, and glue.
We purchase “mill-sawn” lumber and surface it in the shop ourselves. Starting with rough lumber is more work but helps to make a special, unique product!
Our custom mantles are built and finished in the shop and installed in our customers’ homes; this system maximizes the quality and efficiency of the build
The JEM design team collaborates with our customers, producing to-scale drawings that give a visual representation of what we are building. The drawings are broken down into plans and are referenced throughout the project. We take the design element seriously and believe it shows in the work we do!
