These beautiful mudroom cabinets make a statement when you walk into this home! Designed, built and installed by JEM Custom ~ Millwork & Cabinet Company, for a special customer in Elizabeth, CO.
This project is a great example of what JEM does best! Every custom millwork & cabinetry job starts with a conversation between our customer and a JEM millwork & cabinetry expert. Our experienced team collaborates with our customer to refine their vision into a design and plan that accomplishes all of their goals. We don’t put a limit on how many revisions we will do for a design. The first and foremost goal is to provide our customers with exceptional quality and excellent service; in that spirit we will work through every last detail, ensuring we deliver our customers exactly what they want.
This particular design started with a conversation about size 14 shoes, backpacks and coats! Our design~build team worked with our customer to create a truly custom solution, tailored to fit the space it occupies and the family it serves.
As this was a fully custom project, we built all of the cabinets, doors, etc in the JEM Custom shop.
The cabinets themselves are European style boxes meaning they don’t have face frames. Instead we use edge banding on the face of the cabinet boxes keeping straight lines and tight reveals.
The doors were designed specifically for this job; the idea was to mimic the look of having 2 doors that opened opposing each other while utilizing the space properly and keeping everything proportional. We incorporated routes in finger pulls to eliminate bulky knobs or pulls that would distract from the sleek look.
The walnut lift up bench seat is the crowing jewel of this design! We use 1 1/2” thick hardwood bench seats mounted with concealed cabinet hinges and gas struts. This design allows for the bench seat to extend all the way to the back wall without any seams (like you would have with a piano or continuous hinge). There is a lot of work that goes into getting these bench seats to fit just right and operate properly, but we believe it’s these type of details that make a job truly custom.
The trim for this project was designed to blend into the cabinets as opposed to accent them. We wanted everything to flow together, from the floor to the ceiling. We used a 3/4” hardwood furniture base for the toekick and a sleek cove crown molding for the cap.
As these cabinets will be used daily it’s very important to make sure the finish will hold up. We use a proven finishing system that includes extensive preparation of the materials, multiple coats of high quality primer filled and sanded between coats & a 1K or 2K water based top coat that cures to a dull satin sheen and is extremely hard and durable. All of our custom millwork and cabinetry is finished using this same system!
