Completed Feature Wall in Grid Style/ by JEM Carpentry
This grid-style feature wall was designed, built, and installed by JEM Carpentry in Fort Collins, Colorado.. Our customers wanted to add some interior design elements to their new home and called us to help bring their ideas to life! This space in the kitchen/dining area is perfect for a feature wall like this one! Feature walls are a great design element and are relatively simple to build.
The first step to any successful construction endeavor is a thoughtful and intentional design. Below is the scaled drawing for this project created by our designer, Jane Kincaid. Having a visual representation of what we are building is crucial to making sure everything comes out just right.
All of the dimensions are clearly labeled for the customer to see and approve. We show where all of the outlets and other utilities are in relation to the design components. Drawing by Jane Kincaid – Thru the Paintbrush Designs. In this picture lead carpenter Tristin Kincaid is marking where the outlets will come through the 1/4” MDF panel that will be the substrate behind the grid on the feature wall. The seams where the MDF panels meet will be covered by the boards that make up the grid pattern. This material comes in 4’ x 8’ pieces and so they have to be cut and placed intentionally or else there will be visible gaps when the project is completed. Once the 1/4” MDF is up the next step is to install the boards that make up the grid pattern. In this case we used pre-primed finger jointed pine 1×4 boards from the big box store. In this situation we needed to place one of the outlets into the vertical raised components of the feature wall to ensure the overall design was proportionate and pleasing to the eye. Figuring this out in the design phase allowed us to come up with a plan ahead of time and execute it properly and efficiently on the job site. All done! In this case the customers decided to paint the wall themselves, so our job here is done!
